Pray For Peace And The World
That hardly seems like an appropriate headline for a page focused on journalism, but let me explain. All this week, news organizations around the world are supposed to be focusing on covering climate, leading up to the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit that was held this week.
That hardly seems like an appropriate headline for a page focused on journalism, but let me explain. All this week, news organizations around the world are supposed to be focusing on covering climate, leading up to the United Nations’ Climate Action Summit next week.
What I didn’t know is that it was timed in part to coincide with the United Nations International Day of Peace. Heck, I didn’t even know there was such a day. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says he did it because — -
“Today peace faces a new danger: the climate emergency, which threatens our security, our livelihoods and our lives.”
So, with that in mind, I looked at some alternative news sources and almost by accident found that the Catholic news sites are putting even more emphasis on the issue than the so-called mainstream media sites.
Heck, I didn’t even know this was a religious site. I picked it only because it was in my one-time home country of Australia. But it had some of the more telling and insightful articles about the climate crisis.
EG: Green Consumerism is Part of the Problem… Ban Polar Bears, Climate Visuals That Work… Nuclear Power Is About Ideology, Not Solutions.
Similarly I stumbled upon the National Catholic Reporter site. It reported directly on why the UN Climate Summit matters along with a story headlined: “America Wakes Up” which looks at the latest polls on the climate crisis… and my favorite, one about St. Francis of Assisi, titled “Beyond the Birdbath Industrial Complex.” It talks about how we share the planet with all of “God’s creatures.”
I don’t mean to end on a down note, but I have to add two other points. 1) Many of the mainstream media who signed up for the Covering Climate Now movement seem to have fallen off the wagon. That’s disappointing. 2) The Trump Administration has repealed California’s request to set higher standards for preventing car emission pollution — a move that is disgustingly stupid.
